'Andy Davis' '2' review
A Review by Geoff Bough
!POTENTIAL SPOILERS!
‘2’ is the story of David and Sarah, two survivors of an
epidemic that turns people into flesh-crazed ghouls. Before I go any further,
I have to say that ‘2’ is most definitely one of the best
indie zombie films I have seen in a long time.
David awakes to find himself in what appears to be a car accident. When
he comes to, he scrambles out of the car and into a somewhat serene setting.
As he explores, David encounters a horde of infected ghouls. As he flees,
he hears the screams of Sarah who he helps to rescue from a group of ghouls.
The two then take refuge in an abandoned building where they have electricity.
The film really shows the emptiness of what it would be like after some
kind of catastrophic event. A broken and hollow existence with nothing
but your mind to keep you occupied. It’s that mind frame which director
Andy Davis explores in his film.
As Sarah becomes increasingly ill, she notifies David that she is pregnant.
David seems to be elated at this news and views the notion of a baby as
the start of a family and something to look forward to.
We later see that it’s not the pregnancy that has made Sarah ill,
she has unfortunately become infected with whatever it is that is turning
people into the shambling, flesh-eaters outside their sanctuary. David
doesn’t seem to be alarmed by this and disregards Sarah’s
symptoms as the flu.
As time ticks by, we see David’s slow descent into madness as his
thoughts of other survivors out there sinks its teeth into his mind and
consumes his every thought. He watches static on the TV and zones out
into the jumbled mess of thoughts in his head, he listens to the static
on the radio and is convinced that there are people out there coming to
help them.
In an interesting scene played out in David’s mind, we see David
seated at a table with his undead mother and father as well as Sarah.
David’s parents are trying to convince David that the only responsibility
he has left in this world is to commit suicide. David’s father also
tells us of how the infection begun by informing David that while we were
too busy fighting terrorists abroad, terrorists poisoned our water supply
with some kind of infectious disease.
It’s a battle of man vs. his own psyche at this point which I find
to be incredibly intriguing and is executed with precision. The performances
by C. James Roberts as David and Molly Roberts as Sarah were excellent
and both actors should be applauded for their contributions to the film.
Equally impressive is the soundtrack to the film contributed by the band
‘Covered In Bees’. It’s somewhat of a rarity to make
me jump when watching a film but there were some very well placed thrills
in there and the audio mix, effects and soundtrack worked to paint an
ominous and eerie soundscape.
I can’t even describe the intensity of the end of the film; just
know that it’s incredible. Andy Davis and Co. have masterfully crafted
one of the best indie zombie films in recent history. I hope you all get
to see this intriguing film very soon.
